Smart water network management re-inforced at FCC Aqualia
FCC Aqualia and the Israeli company TaKaDu announced a partnership project to deploy the TaKaDu solution which will be used to detect inefficiencies in water distribution systems, provide an integrated management layer, and thereby improve the service offered to citizens.
Following an analysis conducted by the technical teams at FCC Aqualia, a test city in the southern Spain was selected for the initial phase of the collaboration, where the solution is expected to allow better operational decision making and provide early warnings on network inefficiencies (like leaks). These early warning notifications would entail a reduction of water loss and increase the efficiency of the city’s distribution network.
FCC Aqualia's decision to partner with TaKaDu, which is a world leader in this sector, is aligned with its long-term goal of responsible innovation. In addition to improving water quality and enhancing sustainability efforts among its networks, FCC Aqualia’s General Manager Félix Parra, noted that the company "is dedicated to optimizing its water distribution systems, minimizing water, energy and other losses which directly impact the company's ability to manage operational costs and successfully serve our customers." Mr. Parra explains that “we want TaKaDu’s software to become a central solution that could provide us with a birds' eye view of our multiple distribution systems. I believe that with TaKaDu, we will be able to improve our customer service across our networks.”
Although TaKaDu has worked in Spain for a couple of years, this is the company’s first innovative collaboration with a private Spanish end-to-end water management company. “We are very proud to have FCC Aqualia as a new customer. It is a great honor for us to work with such a leading international group. We look forward to helping them further improve their customer service, and create a long term global partnership” Amir Peleg, Founder & CEO of TaKaDu noted.
TaKaDu’s service will be provided to FCC Aqualia through Envirodata, a local partner of TaKaDu specializing in cloud services for water utilities.
FCC Aqualia is the water management company of FCC, one of Europe’s leading groups providing Citizen Services. FCC Aqualia works in more than 1,100 municipalities and operates more than 200 drinking water treatment plants and more than 300 waste water treatment plants in 17 countries: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Algeria, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China and Uruguay.
Currently, FCC Aqualia is involved in 15 research projects, many of which are co-financed with the Spanish government or the European Union (FP7, LIFE +, Eco-Innovation, etc.). Throughout the lines of work that the company develops, an emphasis is placed on smarter and more sustainable integrated water cycle management.
For example, FCC Aqualia participates in the IISIS (Integrated Research on Sustainable Islands) project. Co-financed by the CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development) and supported by Mineco, the project creates innovative solutions for the future of urbanization.
Similarly, the project Smart Citizens, Smart Water, in collaboration with the city of Santander and Cantabria University, seeks the intelligent management of Santander’s water service through new technologies. The initiative includes the placement of devices and sensors so that users have "real time" data about consumption, repair work and cutoffs.
Additionally, FCC Aqualia is developing the SMARTIC ("Water Monitoring System with Real-Time Intelligent Technology") project in Badajoz, funded by the FEDER- INNTERCONNECTA program, whose main objective is to develop advanced indicators of water quality and process automation with drinking water treatment control systems.
