Aqualia, the first operator to integrate the Carbon Footprint calculation into all of its activities

The company already appears in the Register of the MAGRAMA Spanish Climate Change Office.

Since 2012, when the calculation and verification of the Carbon Footprint was carried out in Lleida, Aqualia has continued to make progress with finding solutions to climate change

Aqualia, the first operator to integrate the Carbon Footprint calculation into all of its activities

Aqualia has become the first operator in end-to-end water management to globally calculate (for the whole organization) its carbon footprint for all of the activities carried out by the Company. This is accredited by the Spanish Climate Change Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), by means of the company's entry in their register dated 9 July. The work was carried out very quickly in a period of just under 3 months, thanks to employing the methodology and system used in previous projects for the calculations.

In this way, Aqualia does not only contribute to sustainable development but also brings added value to the towns it provides service to by carrying out its activity with as little environmental impact as possible, creating safer and more controlled surroundings.

This milestone, reached thanks to the work carried out by the Corporate Responsibility and Management Systems department, with data compiled by the Technical department, marks a step forward in the process that began in 2012 when the Company calculated and verified the Carbon Footprint of an Integral Water Service in the town of Lleida.

In 2014, Aqualia made further progress by calculating the Carbon Footprint of the activity relating to the construction of water treatment, purification and desalination plants and their external facilities, carried out by Aqualia Infraestructuras. Completion of this work was marked by its entry in the Carbon Footprint Register of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

The initiative forms part of FCC's strategy to develop new areas that contribute solutions to climate change. Aqualia itself aims to continuously improve by means of an Integrated Management System that includes quality management of processes, products and services, as well as environmental management and a commitment to keeping its interest groups informed.

Aqualia is the water management company of FCC, one of the most prominent citizen services groups in Europe. The company, which serves 23.5 million users, is the leading Spanish company in its sector, the third private water company in Europe and the sixth worldwide, according to the latest ranking by the specialist publication Global Water Intelligence (GWI).

It currently provides service to 1100 towns in 22 countries: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, Algeria, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Kosovo, China, Tunisia and Qatar. In the last financial year, the water management subsidiary of FCC logged a turnover of € 950 million euros and achieved a record business portfolio of more than € 14 billion euros.
