Aqualia renews the management contract for the Abu Rawash wastewater treatment plant in Egypt for four more years

The Egyptian government and Aqualia have renewed the contract for the operation and maintenance of the Abu Rawash Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located in Cairo (Egypt), for an additional four-year period, until September 2029.

The Abu Rawash plant, the third-largest wastewater treatment facility in Africa by capacity, treats 1.6 million cubic meters per day and serves more than six million people. The agreement strengthens Aqualia’s presence in Egypt and reinforces its commitment to improving sanitation services in the country.

The initial contract, signed in 2017, included the design, construction, and operation of the WWTP in collaboration with FCC Construcción and Orascom. The project was tendered by the Egyptian Ministry of Urban Development and was part of the national program to improve water and sanitation infrastructure.

This renewal is a recognition of the quality of service provided by Aqualia since the plant began operations in 2022 and ensures the continuity of a key infrastructure for public health and sustainable development in the Cairo region.

The signing of this agreement coincides with the State visit of the Spanish Royals to Egypt, during which a Business Forum was held today in Cairo. The event featured the participation of Aqualia’s CEO, Santiago Lafuente, as well as José Enrique Bofill, the company’s Director for Africa and Asia, in his role as Co-President of the Spain-Egypt Business Council.

In addition to Abu Rawash, Aqualia has developed other strategic projects in Egypt. The New Cairo WWTP, awarded in 2009 under a public-private partnership model—and currently managed by the company for a 20-year period—and the El Alamein desalination plant, commissioned by the Ministry of Defense in 2016. The latter, located on the Mediterranean coast, has a treatment capacity of 150,000 m³/day and supports the region’s growing tourism industry by providing essential water resources for its development.

Through these initiatives, Aqualia actively contributes to improving the quality of life in Egypt, supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovative water and sanitation solutions.
