SALTEAU Project
SALTEAU is a project under the European LIFE program; it addresses the development and demonstration of an innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable concept to improve the treatment of water from non-conventional sources (wastewater, brackish water, and seawater). This will increase water availability and enable the recovery of high-value-added resources in regions with particular water scarcity and more intensive water needs.
SALTEAU will increase water production from the treatment of non-conventional sources such as brackish water, wastewater, seawater, and brine. The specific objectives of the project are:
- Brackish Water: Advance the development and optimization of electro-assisted technologies coupled with renewable energy and membrane technologies for the treatment of saline streams in the Mediterranean and areas of higher water stress.
- Reuse: Develop and optimize treatment trains based on membrane and bioelectrostimulated systems for the regeneration of high-salinity wastewater streams.
- Seawater: Develop more efficient and lower energy consumption solutions by coupling renewable energies with membrane technologies for seawater desalination.
- Brine: Design, scale-up, and implement membrane, crystallization, and precipitation processes for the recovery of value-added compounds from brine streams generated in desalination plants.
Expected Achievements:
- Production of water and value-added products from unconventional sources such as wastewater, brackish water, and seawater.
- Long-term validation of the treatment trains developed in the project at two demonstration plants: Mediterranean demo plant (Denia - Alicante) and Atlantic demo plant (Adeje - Tenerife).
- Reduction of energy consumption through the use of renewable energies and low-consumption desalination systems.
- Reduction of water costs compared to conventional solutions.
